The BESS optimization market is developing at pace. New markets are opening, trading strategies are becoming more sophisticated, and competition is intensifying. Consequently, an optimization partner that was the right choice a few years ago may no longer be the best fit today.
For BESS owners, this raises a few important questions: Could switching to a more advanced optimizer unlock greater value? Can it be done easily? And is the potential upside worth it?
In 2025, Stefan Hansson, CEO of energy asset owner Ra Energy, was growing increasingly concerned about the company’s optimization partner. Trading revenues were not meeting expectations, while a lack of transparency made it difficult to understand why.
“We were dissatisfied with the performance, and we also felt there was little insight into what was actually driving the results,” he says.
To address the issue, Stefan began exploring alternative providers through market benchmarking. This led Ra Energy to Soltech Energy, a company that independently benchmarks BESS optimizers in the Swedish market.
Amadeus Bode, former Commercial Manager at Soltech Energy, led the process:
“As with all our partners, we supported comprehensive testing to show how Ra Energy’s assets would perform given different optimizers’ historical performance, market access and portfolio sizes. When looking at the performance data over a one-year period, Flower stood out among the group, and they became our top recommendation to the client.”
The benchmarking gave Ra Energy a clearer picture of what its assets could potentially achieve under a different optimization setup. But performance was not the only consideration.

For Stefan, switching optimizer also meant finding a partner capable of supporting Ra Energy as the company continued to grow. For him, Flower met these criteria.
“With our previous partner, we often felt overlooked when reaching out with questions. We found Flower to be far more experienced and committed to building lasting partner relationships,” he says.
Once the decision to switch to Flower was made, Ra Energy terminated its optimization agreement and began planning the transition together with Soltech Energy and Flower’s in-house integration team.
The process included integrating the assets into Flower’s optimization platform and completing the necessary prequalifications.
Erik Falkenhain, Project Manager in Flower’s integration team, was involved throughout the process:
“As with all our integrations, we made sure to tailor the integration to the client’s notice period in order to minimize downtime. The integration was carried out in parallel with the operations of the existing optimizer, ensuring that the asset stayed live and continued to generate revenue throughout the transition period.”

The Flower Box is a ready-made integration hardware from Flower that simplifies the integration process.
Erik, together with his colleagues in Flower’s integration team, handles the full integration process for new assets, from testing and prequalification to software and hardware installation.
“We always strive to ensure as seamless and transparent a process as possible, providing regular updates during every integration phase,” he says.
“With the new process in place, lead times have dropped significantly, making it more attractive and easier than ever for BESS owners to switch their provider.”

Before Ra Energy’s assets could be fully integrated into Flower’s platform, their prequalifications had to be approved by the Swedish TSO, Svenska kraftnät.
Historically, this approval stage has been a potential bottleneck when switching optimizers. However, Svenska kraftnät has recently introduced a faster process, “Förnyad bedömning”, designed to simplify and speed up the transition.
“Previously, it could take months for assets to be approved. With the new process in place, lead times have dropped significantly, making it more attractive and easier than ever for BESS owners to switch their provider,” Erik says.
Once the technical integration was completed, Flower’s Market Intelligence team took over, handling formalities around the BRP change and providing Ra Energy with the market insights needed to determine the optimal timing for the switch.
By the end of 2025, Ra Energy’s assets were live and trading with their new optimization partner.
Since switching to Flower, Ra Energy has been able to evaluate both the commercial performance and the wider partnership. For Stefan, one of the clearest differences has been the level of ongoing support.
“As opposed to before, we now have a close dialogue with a dedicated partner management team, guiding us through market price trends, new market integrations, and the future potential of our assets. This has been crucial to us and our continued growth.”
“This has proven to be by far the most profitable decision we’ve made.”
– Stefan Hansson, CEO of Ra Energy
The change has also translated into higher revenues for the company.
“During spring 2026, we increased our revenues by approximately 30% with Flower compared to the same period the year before, when market prices were higher. This has proven to be by far the most profitable decision we’ve made.”
For Ra Energy, switching optimizer proved to be both a manageable process and an opportunity to unlock significantly greater value from its existing BESS assets.
